CIF-SS boys teams are done. Now comes the hard part

By the look of the votes in the most recent poll and comments, it might boil down to a two-man race for the County Player of the Year between Morro Bay's Dylan Royer and Paso Robles' David Cone.

There are certainly others out there in the discussion, but for the sake of this blog, let's pretend there aren't for one day.

As of Tuesday night, both the Pirates and Bearcats were bounced from the playoffs in the second round of their respective CIF-Southern Section divisions. So there goes one way of comparing the two guys.

Both teams had 20 wins. Both made the second round. Neither won a league title. Team success — often a tiebreaker in many MVP-type discussions — is a push.

So, it has to come down to one-on-one comparisons.

I've seen both play within the past five days, and honestly, there could hardly be two more different players.

Royer, a four-year varsity starter who's amassed more than 2,000 points in his career, is a dangerous shooter without a conscience. He's got an uncanny knack for grabbing steals and is a very good rebounder, especially at his position. But his willingness to shoot from anywhere 20-feet-and-in at any time is what defines him. He only needs an inch of space and is just as adept driving to the basket as he is pulling up for a 15-footer or shooting a 3-pointer.

Cone, the last remaining Paso Robles Bearcat to have played with Derrick Jasper, is a prototype high school big man. He's got a couple go-to moves that are money in the post. Though a knee injury has limited his jumping and mobility, he makes up for it by playing smart. At least partly because of his size (he's listed at 6 feet, 9 inches), Cone is the most dominant defensive player in the county. But he also blocks shots with control, giving his team a great chance at recovering the ball.

A stone-cold shooter. A textbook big man.

Who's better? Who's more vaulable? Who deserves it more?

I hate ties. And I've never been fond of anything that begins with "Co-" (Sorry, Colorado). Somebody's going to win. But the Tribune does have a tough decision on its hands. Keep on voting.

Ok Cone fans, explain WHY Cone deserves player of the year over Royer, not just why he's a good player. We all know that. Have you seen Royer?

Is he a better player than Royer? What does he do better than Royer? Can he dominate a game better than Royer? If you had to take one player, who would it be?

Royer is a better player and the POY. He is a more versatile scorer, he's a better on ball defender, a solid rebounder. Royer can dominate a game full court ON HIS OWN for his team better than Cone. Cone is simply better at occupying space in the middle and drawing attention. Why, because he's 6'9" and a decent shooter. But the award is not for the tall POY, it's the player of the year. I am impressed with his control over his game, but it was hard to judge seen I didn't see him against a player who could challenge him.

Having said that if I was a coach I'd take Cone if I had to pick one or the other to form a team so long as I had a decent point guard, because of the position he plays and his height. 6'9" non-clutz decent shooting centers are so rare and he'd allow me as a coach more options.

Taking nothing away from Royer, I'll tell you why Cone is better. #1, Defense. Does Royer block 5-8 shots per game? Does he virtually lock down the lane so his teammates can roam free and steal balls on the perimeter? Cone does that, and alters more shots than he blocks. #2, Double-Team. How do you double and triple team a perimeter player? You can't. Cone is hacked, pushed, grabbed and molested every time he touches the ball. He is always double or triple teamed and he's able to make quick passes to open teammates while he's surrounded. (Paso would have beaten OceanView if the outside shooters would have been on.) Numbers and common sense say that if one guy occupies two or more opponents, someone has to be open. Royer can't make that claim. Same thing goes for rebounding, somone is always tasked with pushing him away from the basket. In spite of this Cone is scoring 19 a night and averaging a double-double for the season. #3, Leadership. Cone is more than just a ballplayer, he's a standup kid. From 2-21 last year to second round of CIF this year. Give props to Larsen, but ask him about this team and about the big guy and he'll go off about how he puts it all on the line out there. And this is from a guy who's been coaching 30 years. #4, The Tribune owes it to him. You ignore paso and keep giving athlete of the week to girl soccer players while Cone is leading his team to 9 straight league wins! You should be so ashamed of yourselves that you give the kid a make-up call!

Anonymous said...

Of course they're double & triple teaming County. #1) There isn't any tall player in the County that matches up size-wise. #2) His teammates aren't great shooters. But why give him County POY jsut because he's 6'9". Royer draws the defenses best defender, and does get some double-teams. Of course Royer doesn't block 5-8 shots, but how many steals does Cone get? Does he disrupt the offense on the perimeter. Royer is the best rebounding guard, can play point, shooting guard, and forward.

They are hard to compare.

Anonymous said...

doesnt mission have a 6 7 jr?
did he guard cone?

Anonymous said...

yes he did
held him to 4 points

Anonymous said...

cone did absolutely nothing against the 6'7 junior, jerry casey. people can say "oh he was hampered by a knee injury"..well how is he playing well before and after that game if he was injured. Heck, Cone couldnt even win the tip against MP and they had a 6'2 guy jumping against him.

Anonymous said...

Alright, I knew this debate was coming and I've been anxiously awaiting it! So...Cone is 6'9'' and some players are fast. So in other words its not what you have, but what you do with it. When are people gonna realize that it's no knock on the kid for being so tall, instead it is a true testament to his development. He really has developed so much. He also has what few players have, HEART! Anyone who watched that game last night will tell you that. That kid can scrap, he does everything out there. Whenever his team needs him, he's right there for a big basket or a crowd buzzing block. If they need a board he will fight off two guys and get a board, if they need a lose ball he will give his all for it (and 90% of the time I swear he gets it), if his teammate is breaking down he goes up to them looks them in the eye, mouths a few words to them (which I always try to make out, but never can) then he smiles, pats them on the butt, and continues his domination. Thats what it has become, domination. He gets what he wants, when he wants it, how he wants it. That's why Cone is POY, thats why Paso is back after a 2-21 season.

Anonymous said...

Is anyone else sick of Mission bagging on Cone? Get over yourselves!

Anonymous said...

check that, cone had 2 points, 0 blocks against mission prep. county player of the year caliber numbers eh?

Anonymous said...

If we were all judged indefinetly by one performance than I am pretty sure no one would be player of the year, or in that case even considered a good basketball player.

Anonymous said...

there you have it folks! Cone has heart, something Royer et. al. do not possess. You are absolutely right, he's your POY. Royer, Hattar, and all the rest - never seen them dive for loose ball, pump up a crowd with that key three, steal, rebound, or block.

The Paso Cheerleading squad has done your job for you.

mbbball said...

no were not all defined by one game, but did you ever see royer have 2 points? didn't think so.

you already know royer has my vote

Anonymous said...

its county player of the year, not most of the season minus one game against the other dominant team in the county.

i've known cone for awhile, i have never seen a grown kid cry (literally) more than he does, that's not heart that's called being a baby. maybe once he grows up you can give him player of the year. dylan royer has been showing not only that he can be a man, but he is THE man for the past 4 years

Anonymous said...

dylan royer career low: 3 points his freshman year against cabrillo. He has scored single digits only 3 times in the last three years, and this year his low was 8. Tell me how that is not domination from Dylan. A 4 year varsity player, I know Dylan was the Leader out there for Morro Bay the past 3 seasons, heck, he was the second leading scorer his freshman year! Cone... a different story. I hate to bring up that Mission Prep game, but that should have been a statement game for the "POTY" for him to prove that he is the best player in the county, because for once, he didnt have a large height advantage of his opponent (ONLY 2 inches this time). Royer goes in night in and night out and puts up numbers, and double digits pretty much every game since he was a freshman. Cone had 5 games THIS YEAR in which he did not score double figures, more than Royer has had the last three.

Anonymous said...

Cone also doesnt have the advantage of being a guard and touching the ball whenever he feels like it, Royer doesnt have the problem of having zones sit back on him the whole night. Have you ever seen Cone pass? Yeah that's another reason to look at him for POY. He's not afraid to give the rock up if his teamate is open. Think about how many shot attempts he took compared to Royer and tell me thats not a factor!

Anonymous said...

Big kid from a bigger Division. It's a no brainer. Cone will make it in college. He will get faster as time goes on.

This really isn't a tie. Cone is the pick.

Anonymous said...

hands down, Royer is your 2008 POY

Anonymous said...

Royer is the County POY! 2068 career points, 300 career 3-pointers, 81 this year, 80% FT shooter, 16 career games with 30+ points, 6 this year. He has done this despite being double and triple team, hacked, and with teams purposefully trying to shut him down. And at least 7 school records. Talk about WOW factor!

Royer’s ppg average is more than Cone’s season high.

Royer is a leader on and off the court who has taken his team to the 2nd round of CIF playoffs for the first time in over a decade. He shoots, rebounds, steals, dishes out assists, and hustles at both ends of the court. Anyone who has watched him play can attest to his heart and desire to win. He gives 110% every game.

Cone is a good player and helped Paso reach the playoffs but even Hattar is more deserving than Cone.

Royer is the best overall player and has demonstrated that from the very first game of the season. Royer deserves County POY.

Anonymous said...

agreed.

Anonymous said...

Ask any of Royer's team mates if it's fun to play on his teams? If he is double teamd all the tiem why doesn't he pass it to the open player? County Player of the Year should be a team player, not a one man show. Basketball is a team sport.

Anonymous said...

uh im on his team and i think its fun playing with him

Anonymous said...

How many points do you score a game?

Anonymous said...

honestly you cant give him any love? Royer gets double teamed and still scores... is that not good enough? he passes the ball much better than cone does. if i needed a great pass would would i want passing between cone and royer... easy: royer. he is better than cone at every aspect of the game except probably blocking

mbbball said...

yea i played with royer for 3 years in highschool and im pretty sure i liked being on his team.

Anonymous said...

im not gonna say how many points i averaged.. i post anonymous for a reason

Anonymous said...

Have you seen Cone pass? Are you serious? I bet you haven't even seen him play, or maybe one game right? Let me guess...it was the MP game! haha No but seriously the kid is a great passer, I will honestly say I haven't seen Royer play except for 2 games, but I did watch Cone alot...and he is the best passer I have seen around here since, well, ok since Jasper.

Anonymous said...

It will be a sad day if Cone doesn't win Player of the Year. Royer's got more votes, but thats only cause more MB people come on here than PR people. Also cause MP people hate Cone for some reason. Anyway, Cone deserves it. He really does. Royer is a good player, but Cone is just better...in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

who do you guys think we make first team all county and second team all county??

Anonymous said...

so if you think david cone is the best guy since jasper (jasper graduated in 2006)....your saying that he is better than luis santiago from mission prep? c'mon that is not even close. if you have seen the two play against each other it was pure domination..from santiago. Also, gerrell knightshed was better than cone is, but he technically didnt play last year so that wouldnt count.

Anonymous said...

i think first team all county should be:
C- Cone, Paso
F- Woolpert MP
F-Demalleville, SLO
G- Royer, Morro Bay
G- Hattar, Templeton

second team
C- Kennedy, SLO
F- Casey, MP
F- Bussberg, Morro Bay
G- Lowe, SLO
G- Sheplay, NCC

Anonymous said...

dominique sanders is much better than cone as well..

Anonymous said...

to respond to the comments above:

the all county teams look pretty accurate....i've never seen sheplay play tho so i can't back it up or put it down...
i agree louis santiago and knightshed are/were better than cone is...
cone's passing ability: doesn't maxpreps only have cone averaging 1 assist per game?
and yes dominique was better too, he was a good choice for POY last year...
i actually think more PR people are on this blog...
and i feel royer should win POY. i think most people who have seen both of them play this year would agree

Anonymous said...

More Paso people? Well lets see I stick up for Cone regularly, then there are a few others who do to, but I don't see any Paso players on here. In fact I wonder if they even know about this thing. Anyway half of Morro Bay's team seems to be on here cheering Royer on along with all of the Mission team...ohh and the comment said he was the best passer since Jasper, not the best player since Jasper.

Anonymous said...

it seems like the mb people are backing royer, and the paso people are backing cone of course, but then everyone else not from mb or paso is going towards royer. of course that doesn't mean everyone, but the majority are voting royer too so its not jus mb people.

Anonymous said...

Both are going to Cuesta anyway.
Which tells me that High School hoops in this area sucks and no doubt always will!

Anonymous said...

Royer has committed to UCSD. get your facts right. how does this area "suck" at basketball if Jasper went to Kentucky two years ago, Knightshed is playing for a small D1 school in Florida, Luis Santiago is playing for Chico St., and Adrian Hernandez has committed to play at Tulsa next year, after spending two years at a JC

Anonymous said...

WOW,UCSD, Tulsa, Chico St. and some "small D1 school in Florida" Wow! Stop the presses!!!!! Somehow you forgot Westmont! BAWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Anonymous said...

Yeah... you see that game on tv tonight.. Tulsa is in the same conference against MEMPHIS. yeah i don't know what your point is there. Oh yeah, and Jasper's Kentucky team beat that number 2 team, Tennessee. STOP HATIN. where are you playin ball?

Anonymous said...

keep laughing while ur struggling to pay for cuesta and they're getting their educations paid for and getting to play ball

Captain of the Templeton Injured said...

Souns like a pretentious asshole who got into a university to me. Well jackass, get into berekely's chemical engineering school, then you can start insulting people for GETTING AN EDUCATION. Other than that, let's keep it at basketball, okay?

My opinion is that Royer is better now, but Cone will be better in college, merely because of his size, and the superior coaching one recieves at college.

County MVP is Royer.

Anonymous said...

One thing that is funny is that people say Cone can't play against people his size. Both the CIF teams he played this year had tall, athletic big guys, and both games he was very good in. Not just in scoring, but in all the catagories. Against Ocean View they had a 6'7'' kid Takeshi Clifford that Cone not only outplayed, but also did in dramatic fashion by hitting tough shot after tough shot. When they double teamed he was great with his passes and with his leadership. Anyone who can play that well against good competition like that in an enviroment like CIF gets my vote.

Anonymous said...

"STOP HATIN" That's the kid that plays for Templetucky right? By looking at his numbers it looks like nobody could stop him all year!

Anonymous said...

numbers don't say it all. jasper made a key defensive stop yesterday in the final play of the game. how is that supposed to be on paper?

Anonymous said...

Anyway, back to local sports. I know you hate sharing things Scroggin, but I think it is the only fair thing to do in this case.

Anonymous said...

what do you want him to share?

Anonymous said...

I'd have to also say that that Cone and Royer deserve to share the title POY. They have both earned it, and with all this debate, how can you really turn one of them down?

Anonymous said...

Do not share the title... Royer easily deserves the POY

Anonymous said...

agreed royer for POY

Captain of the Templeton Injured said...

I would say Hattar for MVP if our team acutally did something, becuase if we had the success that MB had, then he would probably be seen as one of the best in the state, but since that's not the case, I emphasize my vote for Royer by saying you don't measure a HS MVP by how good you think they'll do in college(Cone), you measure them by team success and who was the msot exceptional on an exceptional team(Royer).

Anonymous said...

word. royer for POTY. Hattar racked up a lot of points...but wins are more important, and its not like royer didn't score at all: 22 points a game.

mbbball said...

it seems like people overall are talking with sense

one question i have is hattar goin anywhere? or is he following in silzers steps and goin to cuesta?

Anonymous said...

SIZE MATTERS, SIZE MATTERS AND SIZE MATTERS.
There is 3 good reasons to pick CONE.

Anonymous said...

thats 3 reasons NOT to pick him. You basically just said..pick cone cuz he's the biggest!

Anonymous said...

So are the other candidates going to keep practicing growing until they get taller? NO
Skills plus SIZE is best.

Anonymous said...

and cone does not have many skills for his size

Anonymous said...

Sounds like you are envious of the big guy. Small guys usually are jealous. Now finish your homework and quit playing on the computer during class.

Anonymous said...

unfortunately, the debate is one of apples & oranges.

A center & guard are judged to two very different standards.

Both are very good Basketball players. Both teams had good seasons.

Is the player of the year the best player? The most valuable? I would argue Royer is the better player (Royer's rebounding ability as a guard is what separates the two to me) BUT is he more valuable?

I would be hard pressed to say one is more valuable than the other.

It's like comparing Kobe to Shaq, subtracting $10 million a year from each.

Anonymous said...

If it's like Kobe and Shaq, then Kobe wins. Case closed.

Anonymous said...

So this is really stupid guys. Take a step back and look at the situation. Morro bay players, and templeton players...of course "everyone" is saying Royer. They are on the same team, and in the same league as MB. If you were to bring some players from Righetti, AG, Atascadero or Cone's own team...Im pretty sure Cone would be gettting a bunch of votes. What Royer was doing to Temp. and Co. Cone was doing to Atown and Co. so don't be swayed into thinkin that Royer is better than Cone just because you're swayed by the "popular vote".

Anonymous said...

How about some track who do you

think is going to win the Pac 7?

Anonymous said...

Royer scored 29 pts against slo in a win and 30 pts, 9 reb, and 5 steals against Atascadero in a win. It doesn't seem like the teams in the pac-7 were that much greater than the ones in the los padres league, so the fact that Cone did well against "Atown and Co" while Royer did it to "Temp. and CO" isn't important. In fact, ask a slo or atascadero guy who is better and see what they say. And Royer is probably getting the "popular vote" because, well, more people think he's better.

Anonymous said...

i like how people say they are similar yet royer avg 8-9 more ppg then cone.

Anonymous said...

Cone averages way more rebounds and blocks than Royer. Since when does scoring alone make a great player? Look what Cone did to Templeton. 20 points, 19 boards? Good God. Cone also would get any vote from any Pac 7 team almost guarenteed. More importantly...forget the players of any Pac 7 team, ask a Coach and no doubt he will say the reason Paso beat his team was due to the big guy from Paso who was just playing outstanding basketball.

Anonymous said...

woo! 20 points 19 rebounds against a team with their biggest guy is 6'4, and biggest after that is 6'3 or so. Cone at 6'9, SHOULD GET 19 rebounds without even having to jump. and one would think he would get more blocks than royer because the guys he guards are smaller than him..thats obvious.

Captain of the Templeton Injured said...

Somebody said cone was kicking ass against ATown? Well MB kicked their asses up and down, just as Paso did. And against Templeton, well our team beat ATown in one game, and lost a very close one the other, so you're not making amazing comparisons.

SIZE DOES NOT DETERMINE HOW GOOD YOU ARE FOR MVP VOTES. How many times can we possibly get that through your head? Both Paso and MB were successful, but Royer was more exceptional than Cone.

Case closed.

Anonymous said...

good call, guy above me. and if someone's gonna say cone averaged way more blocks and rebounds, i'd like to add royer averaged more steals, a lot more pts, a lot more three pointers (duh), a lot better free throw percentage, more than double the assists, and still almost seven reb a game.
cone is good, don't get me wrong.
but royer is better.
and i doubt cone would get the votes of all the pac-7 coaches. they're too knowledgable about what goes on in the rest of the county, not just up north.

Anonymous said...

Basketball is a team sport. Cone is a better team player. Player of the year isn't meant for ball hogs and one man show offs. Royers numbers show he is a gunner and would rather score himself then be part of the team.

Maybe there should be 2 awards.....

One for MVP of a team sport and one for best one man show?

mbbball said...

you say royer was a ball hog and a one man show yet mb had 2 guys avg 10 ppg and one guy at 8.5 so thats 4 guys above 8 ppg.

paso on the other hand had nobody at 10 ppg or above besides cone, and they only had 3 guys over 8ppg.

so id like to know how that makes royer a ball hog when his teammates score more then cone's do?

Anonymous said...

well on the ball hog issue, i have to bring up dominique saunders: last years POTY

Anonymous said...

If Royer is scoring 30 pts per game and the next closest is at 10 pts per game then hee is scoring 300% more then the next player.

This years POTY for sure.

Anonymous said...

why degrade either of the two players?

As to Royer being a 'gunner'. Yes, he absolutely is a 'gunner'. That's the MB offensive scheme, the coaches give him a green light.

He's not perfect, he's made some bad shot selections that may even have cost a game or two by shooting the team out of a game.

But more often than not he's shot them back into games, and he devasted an opponent more often.

Amazing how Kobe often appeared to be a 'gunner' after Shaq left, and before Bynum or Gasol ever showed up to contribute.

Royer has the best percentage shooting on the team, and the team shoots a lot of threes. That's on the coaches. They werea perimeter team. Was MB coached well? That's another question though.

Sounds just like a lot of jealousy against Royer.

See what the St. Joes, SLO, Lompoc, & Atascaderro coaches say.

Anonymous said...

Know how these blogs go....
The fact that we are even talking about either player is validation of the skill they both have.
It's mostly the under 18 high school crowd that trash the players. It's just good ole trash talk, don't let it bother you.

Anonymous said...

royer's pirates and cone's bearcats both were very good teams.. arguably the best two in the county..

So here's my question.. identical records.. both went to second round..

Which TEAM is better??

Anonymous said...

You had to go there?

Paso.

Anonymous said...

First of all, the points that Royer scored were in a fast paced up and down offense. Cone's team slowed it down and shortened the game. I'm sure if a stat showed shot attempts per team, per game, it would show exactly why Cone is the only one in Paso in double figures, and Royer has teamates in double figures. MB shoots a billion times more than Paso does!! Paso won on defense and a good team concept. Cone was the leader of all that. Royer was taking whatever shot he wanted and playing "on again, off again" basketball. Cone is the man.

Also, the game would be close, but Paso's defense is just too stingy, Larson is just too good of a coach and Cone is just too good down low. Paso would pull it off.

Anonymous said...

I agree, no reason to put down either guy. I saw Royer a couple of times and he was a lot of fun to watch, hard to defend and at times could hassle the opposing guard. I saw Paso play a lot more and can tell you that just cause Cone didn't get a lot of assists it doesn't mean he wasn't a good passer, but his teammates were usually too slow to shoot. Anyone who says he's got no skills did not see him play the same games I did. It was obvious the other teams built their defense around stopping him. If he would have had a Wu to pass to, who knows what could have happened. Cone was best player this year, or Paso would have won maybe 6 or 8 games at most.

Anonymous said...

i think morro bay would be beat paso by ten to fifteen points.. oh and by the way morro bay beat paso in a summer league game this year

Anonymous said...

say again Cone was the best player because why???

If MB didn't have Royer, then they wouldn't have had Royer. Maybe they would have won 2 games, maybe 25, we'll never know.

If this, if that, maybe this, maybe that,.. Now I'm sure Scroggins will note in his selection of Cone for POY that without Cone Paso would have only won 6-8 games and Paso sucked except for Cone, and Royer is not the POY because his teammates did not suck.

All I know about the two players is after watching them. I would start Royer in any one of the 5 positions on the court for any team in the County. I would expect him to hold his own. If you think Royer playing center against Cone could not hold his own physically, I suspect you have not watched both of them closely. I would start Cone in 1-2 positions for any team on the County.

They are both good. Royer is a more complete player.

Anonymous said...

Wow! Morro Bay beat Paso in a summer league game. Are you serious? Who cares? It was summer league, it means nothing. Both teams had people missing im sure. Thats how summer league games are. Are you really stooping that low?

Of course Cone will play 1 or 2 different positions...he's 6'9'', he's not gonna go out on the perimeter and guard Casey Lowe or Garrett Ikeda!

Anonymous said...

you said it all, Royer could guard Cone, Cone can't guard Royer

Anonymous said...

royer only scores so much cuz he shoots so much and he only gets rebounds because bussberg is the only other one on the team that can..

No further questions CONE FOR MVP!!

Anonymous said...

Royer can guard Cone? Wow...did anyone watch any Paso games? Cone has become a lethal weapon in the post. There is no and's if's or but's about it. Cone would destroy Royer in the post. He has way to many good moves, and uses his size and strength so well to his advantage. You guys sure know how to talk it up about this big kid, but I'm pretty sure you're gonna be biting your toungue in a few years when you hear how successful he has become in college. His bright future though doesn't influence my pick for this years POY. David Cone.

Anonymous said...

of course everyone votes for the person they know or thats on their team...honestly i think royer is a whole level above cone, but i'm only one person. i wish people would stop putting down the players though, and instead focus on the positives of why each player should win. so yes, in my opinion, royer is better. we're not looking for the player with the most potential in college, the most improved player, the best big man or the best guard...we want the best OVERALL player. but what i wanna know is...what do the unbiased people think? the opinions of non mb or paso guys is probably a decent indication of who is better

Anonymous said...

if royer had the ball so much more than cone and thats why he scored more, then why did cone have more turnovers?

Anonymous said...

Watched two Paso games, Oakland ( Fresno State was scouting that game) & SLO. Royer definitely could guard Cone. Of course Cone would score points against him. Royer's strong enough to stay with Cone and so much quicker. I really have to wonder how much basketball you've seen in your life outside of the Paso gym. Go to some college games outside of SLO to expand your horizons.

Cone could become good, he's smart, but a lot to improve on and hope he does, especially playing against quicker players. Hope he makes it big, good for SLO County if he does. Lot's of opportunities for 6'9" talent. POY, nope, give it to the better player.

Anonymous said...

Let's keep in mind that the maxpreps stats are rough estimates. It all depends on how the person who keeps stats for the school interprets the game. So...Cone's "1" assist per game and "turnovers" aren't very true.

Anonymous said...

oh come on. Using an excuse that maxpreps MIS counts stats is a ridiculous excuse to say cone is better.

Anonymous said...

so now we're questioning the reliability of the statkeepers and maxpreps? hmm...i think we should let the numbers speak for themselves for who is the more complete player and POY

Anonymous said...

at 6'9" he's going to have to come out to the perimeter if he wants to play at a higher level. thats just the way basketball works, outside of slo county there are people that are 7 foot, and they play center. 6'9" is the size of a small power forward, most likely a small foward

Anonymous said...

Now you're saying Cone is too small?
Does this make Royer any bigger?
If Cone is a small forward, what does that make Royer?

Anonymous said...

i wasnt talking about in terms of POY just for his future in basketball

Anonymous said...

Dylan is the best player in the county. he works the hardest. and there is not another person that deserves to be slo county player of the year more than he does. end of story.

Anonymous said...

So you have personaly watched the work ethic of every player in the league and using your highly accurate formula of deduction to determine exacting amounts of effort exerted have determined that Dylan is the one.

Last time I checked Cone was the one dedicating his spring, and summer to various club tournaments and camps. You haven't even seen this kids work ethic. I have, he works ridiculously hard. Don't even try to say Royer is a harder worker than him.

To the person who watched two measley Paso games, then told me to "expand my horizons": I played college basketball, I played basketball overseas, I have worked out with NBA players such as Grant Hill...I am pretty sure I know more about basketball than you will ever know. So maybe you should stop thinking that you are God's gift to the game and look at Cone like he is. A very good player that in my opinion is the County Player of the Year.

Anonymous said...

"measley" Paso games? They got thumped by a more athletic Oakland team. Cone is a very good high school player, never said he wasn't. I am looking at Cone as he is today, without blinders. Awfully touchy, are you Cone's agent? I haven't knocked him, and want him to succeed at a much higher level. Puhleeeeez, though, high school fans see what they want to see. You must've played in Bulgaria.

Your lobbying for Cone for POY is almost over thank goodness. He's getting ready for JUCOs or?, Poly could sure use some post help, maybe in 2 years, he's 6'10" and will have a more complete game. POY, nope.

Anonymous said...

I heard MB was going to sweep CPOY honors, boy-Royer girl-(?)...does anyone know who it is?

someone said somethin about cone's summer schedule?...royer has gone to multiple west coast all star camps, college invite only camps, played national tournaments with an adidas team, made all tourney team at aau tournaments, etc. and his work ethic is tremendous. i have NO idea how hard cone works, so i can't knock the kid, he may work very hard. but royer is definitely as dedicated as i've seen. people are going off topic though. i hope both players become good college players, both have the potential. so good luck to both of you. but this topic should be best player this year. so let's please stay on the topic here

Anonymous said...

Who has more intersst from college scouts?
Cone.
Of course mr. "I couldn't make it in the pro's but I am still the expert on this blog" thinks he knows it all.
I think the current college scouts know a little bit more and Cone has has more interest.

Read Scroggs latest blog entry and tell me you think Cone may only play JC if he's lucky.

Anonymous said...

I don't see how Cone isn't the Player of the Year. This kid is for real. He had a tremendous season. Please give it to Cone and let's find something else to fight about.

Anonymous said...

k first of all lets look back at like the last couple years of centers... Luis Santiago, Tyrone Armstrong, Knightshead, Alex Raj... the list goes on and on. Can Cone match up with anyone of them no way. Zac wheeler would give him a run for his money even though he is like 7 in. shorter. and in my opinion Shane Kennedy from slo would at least hold his own against him.
Then think about the guards in the last couple years the only ones that really matches up with dylan is dominique sanders.
i've seen both of these players play over the last couple years and this year and they both are definetly great basketball players but Cone is not on the same level as royer.
And for the guy that says royer doesnt have as much heart as cone does i dont know if you've ever seen him play or just dont really pay much attention but you are missing something for sure cause that kid has as much heart as anyone that i have ever seen play basketball.
and plus its alot easier to lock down the key and have 5-8 blocks a game when your 6'9" then when your maybe 6'1" just throwin that out there.
not to take anything away from cone he's a good player but i think dylan has had a much better year, and if dylan was a few inches taller we wouldnt even be mentioning anyone else in this conversation.
end of discussion

I vote David Cone.
He is pretty much the best out there.

Anonymous said...

Royer has my vote.
He's a better all around athlete than Cone.
and most of the central coast agrees.

Anonymous said...

The best out there....please tell me your kidding. what can he do better than royer? Block shots.. he's fricken 6'9 if he couldnt do that then he doesnt deserve to step on a baskteball court. Royer has more pts, more steals, more threes, more assists... What more do you want from the kid. if they were both the same size would this even be a discussion...NO WAY!
royer carried that team, no one was harder on himself when they lost of prouder of their teammates when they won. he is an all around amazing baskteball player and plays with the most heart and the most intensity that i have seen.
Royer had over 2,000 pts did cone....no. dylan started on varsity since freshman year and gave nothing but sweat, blood and tears every second that he spent on that court, and no offense to cone but if he was the same age as any of the other centers that paso has had in the last couple years he would see very little playing time because they were just better than him.
royer has one of the most pure shots that i have seen in a long time and if u leave him even a little gap to get a shot off your screwed.
Cone is a good player and who knows what will happen with him in college. i just have a problem giving the POY award to him when he's not even the best center that paso has seen in the last 3-5 years.
royer on the other hand broke what 8 scoring records and surpassed 2,000 pts. if that doesnt get him the award by itself then maybe the countless hours that he dedicates to basketball during the offseason should. going down to LA to play club every weekend and rarely seeing his friends.
this kid has more heart and is more dedicated than anyone around.

I also vote for Cone.

Anonymous said...

"If Royer was as tall as Cone". What about if Cone was as fast as Nathan Nelson?! Royer isn't as tall. Didn't rebound the way Cone does, donsn't block shots the way Cone does, doesn't get hacked and shoved all the time the way Cone does. Ask Larsen who he would rather play center, Cone, Knightshead, or Tyrone Armstrong, then tell me he's not even the best center Paso's had. Not to mention the success Paso had this year with 4 sophmores on the team and an energetic but not real talented suppoting cast and the vote has go to Cone. I can also tell you that the energy these guys played with started with their captain, the big guy himself, who also went to So Cal every weekend to play AAU ball and gave up his summer to get better. Two very good players, but the most important to his team has to be Cone.

Anonymous said...

ok person above me get a clue knightshead and tyrone would both eat cone alive, and tyrone was extremely lazy. it doesn't matter hwo hard cone worked, i mean its nice, but those guys still would have destroyed him in the post. and ur crazy if you think royer didn't get hacked and shoved all the time. and for your royer doesn't rebound the way cone does or block shots, well cone doesn't score, steal, pass, shoot 3's, or shoot freethrows as well as royer does. dont try and say cone can do more then royer casue thats just a rediculous statment.

Anonymous said...

agreed royer for president

Anonymous said...

Cone for VP.

Anonymous said...

Cone could beat Knightshead or hold his own against Armstrong. Ive seen all of them play! Seriously, Cone is that good. Shane Kennedy...a good player, Cone made him look foolish. Tanner Hinek...a good player, Cone made him look foolish. Wheeler could hold his own? No Way! Cone is way better than you guys are giving him credit for. Also who was traveling to Pasadena every weekend? Cone was. Thats right guys EVERY weekend. He would leave Saturday morning and come home Sunday night. Dont tell me he's a slacker. His game is not all about his height, he is the smartest around and he has improved on the finer points of the game like his outside shot and defense. He is the player of the year. To say is not at the same level as Royer is a statement made from pure jealousy.

Anonymous said...

Cone for president! Royer for VP! Wow...I am seriously gonna tell you that Cone could beat Gerrell or Tyrone. You can believe me or not, but I know that it is true. I would love for those two big kids to come back to Paso so Cone could show everyone I'm right.

Anonymous said...

gerrell would eat cone alive. too strong, too solid. cone is solid too but gives up too much in the weight and strength department

Anonymous said...

gerrel and tryonne would dunk on cone. all day. how could you possibly think cone is better?!?

Anonymous said...

wheeler would go to work on cone

Anonymous said...

Whatever dude, you're off your rocker!

Anonymous said...

You're wacked dog.

Every single player from AG is better then either of these guys.

Anonymous said...

Haha it's good to have some humor on here.

Anonymous said...

haha ag players being good at basketball, we have jokes in this blog too i guess

Anonymous said...

I hate to beat a dead horse but Cone for POY. It is the only sane thing to do.

Anonymous said...

that's beating a horse that'll hopefully never happen. only insane people (or ones that haven't seen royer play) believe cone is better. royer for POY

Anonymous said...

Have you ever seen Cone play? Yeah, cause I've seen both. Cone for POY!

Anonymous said...

so have i and royer is the obvious choice, at least the voters know whats up

Anonymous said...

amen to that

Anonymous said...

If it's obvious then why are we talking about this? You need to get out of Morro Bay, get some uv rays in your system and go watch Cone win POY.

Anonymous said...

see thats the thing, why do all the cone fans think that royer is getting only mb votes. if he was he would most likely lose considering morro bay isn't a huge community and is about 20,000 people less then paso. so obviously there are lots of other people voting for royer that are outside of morro bay, because he's been getting more votes. just because a majority of the paso people are voting for cone doesn't mean all royers votes are coming from mb. of course people dont listen to logic and someone will make some remark about how im wrong and its still only mb people. numbers dont lie folks. either does the voting.

Anonymous said...

Let's keep in mind that MB people or not, this is mostly under 18 people talking. They haven't seen both play, and have no room to talk. Personally I have seen both play, I think Cone deserves POY and I don't live in Paso, but thats cool dude, you can keep thinking everyone kisses up to Royer like you do.

Anonymous said...

This is the first and last comment I will ever leave on here. Morro Bay fan's: Royer is a very good ballplayer. He is one of the best in the past few years and I give him a lot of credit. But. You have to look at this thing from a Paso fans point of view. 3 years ago= basketball heaven. Jasper, Armstrong, Barazza, etc. it was great! Then Larson leaves, Conde comes in and ruins everything. The best team in school history to the worst team in school history! Cone fights through last season still giving 100% and putting up good #s. Then Larson comes back (a ray of hope) but it turns out the true success of the team didb't lie in Larson but instead Cone! Cone worked so hard during the offseason and urged his teamates to as well. Then he played his guts out all season. For someone who turned a team around like he did, put up numbers like he did, was a huge force like he was, played as hard as he did, played with the supporting cast he did, played with the horrible knee injury he did (he is still recovering from), well to us Paso fans that guy, irrevalent of his height seems to us to be the POY, and well also seems a little bit like the Savior of the Paso Robles basketball program. His hard work not only inspired his team to do well, but also will still play a role as JV players admire him in their transition to Varsity. Sorry for the big long comment...but it's the truth fellas

Anonymous said...

irrevalent.. haha

Anonymous said...

hurry up Scroggins, put this blog out of it's misery.

Select a POY. You are going to dissapoint die-hards from Paso or die-hards from MB. There were three stand-out County players this year.

So pick Hattar.

Anonymous said...

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Anonymous said...

i know people are going to get defensive from this comment, but i still don't understand how anyone with a basketball background and who has seen both players play (and who isn't from morro bay or paso) can honestly think cone has more basketball talent than royer. cone is a good player, but come on..i think we need to do justice to the sport of basketball and give it to the player who has flatout more talent (royer).

Anonymous said...

i dont think its an argument of talent, its obvious royer is more talented, if it was just most talented cone wouldn't even be in the discussion it'd be hattar and royer. but its who did the best on the best team. as too the guy who posted anonymous at 6:06 i understand cone is a good player and brought paso out from the cellar. but the point is who was more important and better this year, so im not sayin u shouldn't vote for him, im sayin paso people shouldn't say only mb people are votin for royer.

btw the guy who posted before him how do you know that this blog is mostly under 18 people? have you polled everyone? and how am i kissing up to him simply cause i think he deserves poy stop tryin to act hard over a sports blog.

Anonymous said...

Cone brings a basketball program back from the dead. Leading his team emotionally, physically and with committment.

Dylan just shots the ball any time he touches it.

How can a gunner even compare with a 6'9" stud leader?

CONE is the man. get it?

Anonymous said...

naw we dont royer is still better.

Anonymous said...

You sure can tell the student posters by the poor english.

Anonymous said...

yeah i must not get it either. for some reason i still see royer as a lot better. imagine that.

Anonymous said...

what about achievements?
just this season, royer has received two all-tournament awards, one of them as MVP down in Carpinteria.
oh and don't forget about MVP of the Los Padres League.
i'm curious: what awards has Cone received this year?

Anonymous said...

Who got MVP of the PAC-7? If it's not Cone then the argument os over.

Anonymous said...

That is exactly why Cone should win POY. Randy Hunter won Pac7 MVP because he won last year (when he deserved it) and because his team got 1st...not because he is the best, or most VALUABLE. Cone is the best player in the county and in the Pac 7. He also deserves to win cause you guys talk so much sh$% about him. All of it is ignorant and childish and it ridiculous because I am pretty sure he is better you. Wayyy better.

Anonymous said...

sounds like you had to try a little too hard to back cone up on that one. i agree with the guy above the last comment. i think the fact that royer got mvp even though his team got third place, while cone didn't get it although his team got second, is pretty self-explanatory. and if a player won the award for getting sh$% talked about them, both players would win.

Anonymous said...

The MVP should come from a League Championship team. How valuable is a player to a loosing effort?

Anonymous said...

If we're giving the award to the person that has the most sh$% talked about them, then it's probably going to a kid from Mission, because nobody around here likes them

Anonymous said...

speaking of mission prep..

http://youtube.com/watch?v=svmxM-XXAaU

Anonymous said...

That's so hard...NOT!

Anonymous said...

So there is more politics in the voting in the Pac7 than the voting from the Los Padres. Who cares about league MVP, this is about the county...Randy Hunter isnt in this county...this really is very close but in my mind Cone is the best player in the county. He came up huge at both ends of the floor this season, not that Royer didn't, but Cone is just too good.

Anonymous said...

royer hands down. sorry. not that royer is great, but cone is only good because of such a height advantage over everyone else
