Changing the subject

Not that I don't like the Mission Prep debate and the theories on the ripple effects of Tom Mott's departure from the school in 2006, but I agreed with one of the posters who was looking for a new topic. And I've got one.

The Elks San Luis Obispo County Track Meet is this Saturday, and it'll be one of the few remaining chances for local fans to see Royals star junior Jordan Hasay.

Hasay, a junior distance runner who does most of her work outside the county's borders, is slated to run the 1,600-meter race. She already has the best time in the state at 4 minutes, 44.12 seconds, and at last year's county meet established a national best and set an all-time sophomore national record.

How about this for a poll? Who here's actually seen the phenom run? If you haven't, local track aficianados are always recommending that you do so while you can. Hasay is an Olympic level talent on track to be a superstar athlete, perhaps the best in any sport that's ever come out of SLO County. Soon, she'll be running for a top-flight college program — or in the pros.

She only runs a handful of local events each year and will be running at Cuesta on Saturday sometime between 10:30 and 11 a.m.

I'll have some more in-depth coverage on the meet and other events to watch in Friday's edition of The Tribune. Also, expect county basketball players of the year and all-county teams within the next week.

Oh, and feel free to talk Paso Robles football any time. Or three times.

P.S. I'm not a bum. Our sports editor was on vacation, and I was doing some fill-in work.

Thank you Scroggin

hasay is from mission prep, everyone freak out!

Anonymous said...

Nobody has a problem with Jordan. She reaces against the best in the country/world. Everything she accomplishes is widely recognized as being the pinnacle of running at her age group.

Anonymous said...

I hear she's living at Mott's bed and breakfast.

Anonymous said...

Yeah.. Tom is paying her $50,000 a race...but only if she wins! Atleast his bed and breakfast is better than Paso's living conditions

Anonymous said...

Yes he talked about something other than mission prep

Who do you think will win the Pac 7 in football?

Be honest

Anonymous said...

ok honestly, i don't care about football in the spring.

Anonymous said...

Ditto!

Anonymous said...

I care about football in the spring. I hear AG looks real good for next year in Football. Word has it Atas will fall to AG. North County teams will blow in 08.

Anonymous said...

You have to be kidding me North county blow you are a joke

Atascadero is basically the same team as last year returning most of their players

And Paso is the same way with a bunch of stand out players

The pac 7 title will be fought between Paso and Atown

Anonymous said...

7:47

Get your info right sorry but AG has a lot of work to do

Anonymous said...

We learned 3 things at the Elks meet.
1- Jordan Hasay is truly in a league of her own.
2- San Luis Obispo girls rock.
3- Paso men are dominant.
Also it was good to see many some of the Pac-7 /Los Padres all team football player running sprints. SLO and Atas had some big men running 100m and 200m. You usually think of big football player only throwing but some big boys run too.

Big congats to Jordan, SLO girls and Paso boys. Way to dethrone AG...

Scroggin, POY please!!!

Anonymous said...

its royer you coward.. already old news

Anonymous said...

This blog is on TRACK.
Basketball is done. Who cares who player of the year is. It doesn't mean anything.
In track we have national rankings on many local High school athletes.

Anonymous said...

Has anybody actually compared Hasay to other local runners? She normally is about a lap or so ahead and should have her own races against her own clock because she makes the other runners look like they are walking.

Anonymous said...

Why does Mission come up so much more than any other school or local sports?

Anonymous said...

Because you bring it up.

Anonymous said...

im pretty sure people can post whatever they want on any blog, it doesn't HAVE to be on a certain topic, and obviously some people care about the POY because were still talking about it. so whoever posted that blog above needs to get a clue.

Anonymous said...

did anyone else see the quote from the mission prep golf coach today? that is the garbage that lock brought to the athletics program. at least when mott was there the golfers were good. From such a rich school with so many kids living in country clubs you would think that they would be better

Anonymous said...

It was great seening a headline above the fold about the Paso baseball team and their terrific lefty, John Brehm. Then I realized Paso was playing SLO, so I guess that explains the coverage. Too bad Paso doesn't play MCP, that way they might get at least one more game covered. I know that there are volleyball games, and girls intermural badmitten leagues that have to be covered by a limited staff, but you still have a lot of male readers that prefer boys football, basketball and baseball to the politically correct "fairness" of covering SLO girls soccer and AG water polo. (To the exclusion of those sports that really interest us.)

Anonymous said...

I hope Cone wins just so 5:25 will learn to think before he writes. Why would you call the other poster a coward just because he wants POY to be announced? To you even know what coward means?

Anonymous said...

Hey, All-Star games this Sunday at Cal Poly. People will be able to see Royer, Hattar, Cone, etc. all play on the same team against the team from the south, Hunter from Righetti, Brunello from St. Joe's, Madrigal from Pioneer, et al.

On the girls side, Yetter and two or three others from MP, Saia from MB, DeWitt from Nipomo, against Reizebos from St. Joe's, Rentshler from Cabrillo, Ray from Lompoc, etc.

Should be a good chance to see some of the players who have been discussed on this board on the court, side by side...

Anonymous said...

Hey Paso, you have your own sorry paper up north there. Don't they have a blog? This is the the Tribune.
Envious are we?
Go drink some more wine.....

Anonymous said...

im not even from paso, but isn't the tribune supposed to be the whole county? i dont think its envy, its jus obvious how much mp is covered over anything else.

Anonymous said...

I'm not even from SLO, lol. From AG. AG is in SLO County and we never get any press from the Trib.
The MP stuff should fade after Hasay moves on to college.

Anonymous said...

Cone is out of the all star game... his knee hurts

Anonymous said...

So Cone isn't gonna play in a whack all star game because his knee is in bad shape and he isn't trying to waste his future just so some people can watch him play on the same team as Royer. Is there a problem with that?

Anonymous said...

why is this all star game whack?

Anonymous said...

Cause Mott is running it...ohh sorry one dream foundation.

Obviously if Cone's knee is still an issue, than it is a pretty sufficient injury, don't sit here and act like he is missing the game because of a little bruise or something.

Anonymous said...

royer won the CPY!!!

Anonymous said...

Hey 1:39 anon I am from SLO and I think the tribune sucks at covering SLO sports. I feel they are always biased towards other cities and their athletes. It is always a joke with us in SLO town.

Anonymous said...

7:12, if he won then why wasn't it in the paper? If he really did win, or if he is going to win then it will be a sad day in sports. Honestly it really will. Scrutinize me however you feel you need to but the truth is that Cone is a great player who guided his team back from the slums. He deserves POY for being a great player and a great individual. Anything short of POY is just politics in SLO county. Cone if you read this...thanks for a great year. YOu have my vote

Anonymous said...

scroggin was at his school last night taking pictures and interviewing him.. sorry cone..

Anonymous said...

how is it a sad day in sports that royer won? what is your knock on him? he averaged more fricken points than cone's season high!

Anonymous said...

Because basketball is not all about points. Cone is a great player, better then Royer and Cone deserves the award for leading his team and playing like he did. The girl from Mission won partly because she kept the streak going at Mission. Cone couldn't erase last season but this year was about as close to any crazy someback movie as your going to get. He was dominant. I don't care that Royer apparently won. Show some love for Cone everyone, how often do you have a comeback like that?

Anonymous said...

just to let the person above me know, your crazy if you think cone has more skill or is better then royer. and 2nd of all it wasn't only cone that led them to a good year, the fact is the pac 7 wasn't that great this year.

Anonymous said...

A weaker PAC 7 improved Paso's wins from 2 to 19? Wow! Pac 7 was weaker but not bad.

Anonymous said...

The reality is that size does matter and Cone will have a great college career because he is big.

Anonymous said...

How about football who will win the Pac-7

Anonymous said...

Basketballs season is over, Lets move on to football talk

Anonymous said...

I do not believe it is football season yet.

Anonymous said...

congrats to michael hattar and mitchell woolpert to getting selected to their all state teams for their divisions.

Funny that neither cone or royer were selected even though we had all that discussion over which one should be POY. And Woolpert was only selected second team.

Its always interesting to see how much more knowledgeable basketball watchers view the central coast.

Good job Scroggins, post another blog already

Anonymous said...

More knwledgable basketball watchers? Please...Cone and Royer are the best this area has to offer. No doubt.

Anonymous said...

Spring football is starting who will win the pac-7

Anonymous said...

Stop talking about football, seriously it isn't football season and football can wait.

Anonymous said...

whats the website to find out who made the state teams for there divisions?

Anonymous said...

www.calhisports.com

Anonymous said...

im pretty sure woolpert is in d5, so u cant compare him to royer, and i think templeton is a division lower then mb too. even if they arent, royer can avg 26 ppg too with ease if he's on a crappy team where he gets all the shots and is one of the only guys in double figures. i dont see how u can compare anyways. the first game they played eachother they were even, the 2nd game hattar had 4 pts, and in the all star game royer again outscored hattar. im pretty sure it's obvious who was more dominant.

Anonymous said...

bob mott cant dunk

Anonymous said...

When is Royer going to sign with Cuesta?!?! Even Poly doesn't want him and they came in next to last in the Big Worst Con.! Royer and Yetter are both County POY's and going nowhere. Shows how weak High School hoops is around here.

Anonymous said...

Mott didn't get the full time AD job at Handcock. Some woman outside the area did. Like my Granny used to say "Lies have short legs" See ya in Cape Town Big Fella!

Anonymous said...

It's always football season. You have to work out all year round to be big, fast and competitive. Not like those other girly sports you can just pick up during the season.
That being said, ATAS has the best off season program so they are currently the favorite until someone proves otherwise.

Anonymous said...

taylor bussberg cant dunk either...

Anonymous said...

from the beginning mott said he didnt want the full time job

Anonymous said...

Congrats to Royer for POY. That being said I really can't believe Cone didn't win. I saw more MB games than Paso games, Royer was very good, but Cone was just better. I would call their play about a tie, but the fact that Cone improved his teams record by seventeen games...SEVENTEEN GAMES, to me that makes it obvious that Cone should have been selected POY. Scroggin you really need to avoid the politics of the area when picking this award. The reason you chose Royer is because he was supposed to win at the start of the year...not because he's better. That is sad. At least give Cone a big article to pay him back.

Anonymous said...

7:08
I agree but the rivalry will be even bigger between them and paso this year
Paso has alot of returning starters
Garried Mitchell,
Tom Bernall,Mitchell vandyke,weston powell
Jose Lopez,Andy Bridge,
Matt Remington,and alot more.
Therefore I say PASO

Anonymous said...

paso won two games last year and cone was on the team its not like he got any better from last year yea they won more games this year but it wasnt do to just him.. paso still got killed to mission prep lost to a terrible golden west team lost to cabrillo and atown.. and your telling me cone is good???

Anonymous said...

how could any human being watch morro bay and paso games and think cone is better than royer?

Anonymous said...

Cone got wayyy better than last year. He WAS the reason for there improvment. When they lost to those teams (excluding MP) they were still early in the season and growing from the year before. I am not saying Royer is not excellent, but I just think Cone is a little mnore deserving.

Anonymous said...

well mr. scroggins didn't and thats all that matters for the tribune county player of the year...

Anonymous said...

cone may have gotten better, but he didn't get 17 games of improvement better, the fact is paso was just a better team this year and had a better coach. im pretty sure ucsd wants royer so i dont see how he's not going anywhere. and too the dude that said football is the only sport year round and the rest are girly sports, get real, basketball has more games and practices in the summer then football does. and considering their about even during the year, im pretty sure that makes basketball more intense and more work then football. plus anybody that simply shows up for football can make the team since their are like 40 slots.

Anonymous said...

You're joking right? Football players are FAR more physical, stronger and tougher then basketball players. Go play with your basketball.

Anonymous said...

Im pretty sure that if UCSD hasn't offered him a scholarship by now, they most likely aren't going to.

Anonymous said...

im pretty sure ucsd doesn't offer athletic scholarships cause their d2 but theyre still trying to get him to play.
and no football players all think their all stronger, their really not tho. of course the strongest players do come from football, but that doesn't mean that all football players are bigger and stronger, their still slower, not as quick, cant jump as high, and all around less athletic then basketball players. anyone can get that big if they lift every month of the year.

Anonymous said...

That's the point.
They have to work out every month of the year tobe competitive int football.

Thank you for making my point....

Anonymous said...

D2 schools don't offer scholarships? It is that true? Honest question.

Anonymous said...

i think the last poster is right d2's dont over athletic scholarships, but i could be wrong?

Anonymous said...

i dont see how that proved ur point, i said they lift all year, they dont play football all year, 2 different things. and basketball, baseball, along with other sports do their sports year round, idk where u have been lately.

Anonymous said...

when obese kids are looked at for college scholarships its not that difficult... (football)

Anonymous said...

new blog time scroggins

Anonymous said...

7:21 pm
I can tell you are not football material.
Open another bag of chips and go back to the couch.

Anonymous said...

I am still wondering why we are talking about football. It will have it's time to shine but let's talk about the spring sports right now!

Anonymous said...

Like TRACK, the subject of this blog post...............
Not basketball.

Anonymous said...

It's Scroggs fault.
He is too lazy to put out noew subjects.
Says he doesn't have time. Right.

Anonymous said...

What is a noew subject?

Anonymous said...

The new subject should be about softball, baseball and track! Paso Girls are ranked number 3 in their Cif division for softball! Michelle Moses is crushing the ball and owning the circle!
Nobody in the area can touch the paso guys track team. Nathan Nelson is back to full speed.
Paso will battle right down to the wire for the Pac7 title in baseball... got to give it up to slo for pulling of 2 out of 3 from the paso guys.
Spring sports are great! Starting to Warm up!

Anonymous said...

We should change the name to.....

The Paso Tribune.

Then we could only talk about sports teams from Paso.

Anonymous said...

So last year, Paso had 3 great throwers and you were all over them while ag had 4 and there was nothing much about them till they dominated league finals.

This year, AG has 3 guys over 54ft in shot and 2 of them over 160 in discus and you dont talk about them at all. Oh I guess its not important even though all 3 of those kids are in the top 25 in state for shot put.

This paper is way bias and I am getting pretty annoyed by it.

Anonymous said...

I agree. AG "IS" part of this County and is not represented much at all in this forum.

I am tired of all this Paso @#$%.

Anonymous said...

D2's do give scholarships it depends on which school and how much money the program has.

Anonymous said...

Yes, AG has great throwers and they get absolutely no press and absolutely deserve it, but AG also has incredible distance runners...Karlee Owens, who is currently 22nd in the state in the 800m for running 2:15 and ran a 5:07 at Arcadia. Jana Hayashi with a 11:27, Maddie Cline who is a Freshman Paso athlete with a 5:13in the 1600 and there is also a girl from Shandon with a great 1600time of 5:08 that you never hear about. They will have better times to come as well in the next few weeks. The distance boys as well, Freshman and Sophmore, Morgan Wack...2:03 in the 800 and Hugo Gutierrez 2:02 are phenominal times...These are excellent feats in itself and they are among some of the top runners in their division or in their respective age groups. I know all this because I keep track but really if the sports department did their job they would know all this as well. Or maybe they do and they just choose to not print it.

Anonymous said...

Just got back from CIF Prelims in Moorpark and two of the runners you mentioned are advancing to CIF Championships. Cline in the 1600 with a time of 5:06.14, Owens right behind her at about 5:09 and then Owens also advances in the 800m as well.
