The All-Bloggin' Team

In a conversation with Mission Prep football coach Joe Silveira this week, the topic quickly turned to Tribune County Football Player of the Year and who the best nominees would be.

"That's who I'd go with," Silveira said after saying who he'd go with.

Not that the conversation with Joe has much to do with this blog, but it sparked an idea. People like giving input on things like Player of the Year debates and All-County teams.

Think about it. What if I asked blog readers to give out thoughts on who should be regarded as All-County performers? Could you resist from clicking that "add comments" link?

I'm guessing maybe.

But if you choose to leave some nominees, I'll read every one. When the sports department gets together in the next few weeks, we'll take everything into account.

So have at it. Who should be the All-County first-team quarterback, left tackle and safety? Or second-team punter? (Honestly, that's the toughest one to pick.)

I think All county first team should be Andrew Hall for offensive lineman. Jake Rommenelli for running back. Tyler Bogart for wide receiver. Jake Fitzgerald for 2nd team quarter back. I also think you should give honorable mention to Templeton for being in a new league and holding their own. Most of Templeton had to go both ways. Templeton only has 810 students in the whole school and they were up against much bigger schools. Just a thought.

Just wondering what happened to last weeks blog about rivals. I was never able to comment on it and now it's gone. Just going back to that one...By far, the biggest rivalry amongst SLO county high schools is between Atascadero and Paso Robles. These two schools' rivalry goes way beyond football. It is a rivalry of cities. They go at it in all sports. Either team could lose every game but a win over the other makes a season. Also, going undefeated but a loss to the other is devestating. Besides sports, the two go at it in FFA and other school clubs. It is a true rivalry. The best is shirts that are made saying "My son may be a Bearcat...But I will always be a Greyhound!" and vice versa. The rivalry is between adults and all members of the community.

From SLO -
Co-County Players of the Year
Conner Reese - Quarterback and
Kevin Martin - Wide Receiver both from SLO Tigers.
1) Both dominated their respective positions statistically all through the year.
2) Both rewrote the SLO Tiger record books for passing and receiving.
3) Both were instrumental in leading SLO from a 2-7-1 record in 2005 to a 8-2 record in 2006.
Even with all of the great athletes from across the county, these two still rose above the rest.
Also all county first team:
From SLO:
Daniel Lehmkul - Offensive Tackle
Jason Fitzsimmons - Offensive Guard
Ben Hanson - Wide Receiver
Zack Thorne - LB/RB
Andrew Acosta - LB
Nate Egan - DL
From Atascadero:
Michael Reynoso - RB
Brandon Roberts - TE/LB
Marc Wolfe - DE
Jack Robinette - LB
From Paso Robles:
JR Felgenhauer - RB
Bret Wise - WR
From Arroyo Grande:
Reade Lobdill - RB/LB
Matt Lynch - DB
From Templeton:
Jake Romanelli - RB/Safety

Other SLO players deserving recognition:
Brian Lewelling - RB
Sean DuBois - TE
Robert Rose - LB
Jake Miller - Safety
Austin Nichols - Cornerback
Robbie Nadalsky - Punter

Just my quarters worth - Good Luck

How about considering the dynamic duo of Kevin Martin and Conner Reese as co-players of the year? Together they have broken almost all of San Luis Obispo High School's passing/receiving records.

From a big stats fan.....
Conner and Kevin are both top 50 in the country according to Maxpreps. They are also putting SLO County on the map. P.S. It takes great blocking to allow for big passing numbers.

Co-county players of the year should be Kevin Martin and Conner Reese. They are both leading the county stats as well as top 50 in the nation.

SLO County Player of the Year - Conner Reese or Co-County Player with Kevin Martin. Both have dominated, although other receivers on SLO team have also been doing well so the receptions get spread around a bit.

On Max Preps both are in the top 10 in the State and top 50 in the nation - quite an accomplishment for a team that got no pre-season recognition at all!

Plus, you might not know this but both are great individuals off the field. Conner is an outstanding basketball player (all league and all county 2 years in a row) and also plays baseball. Kevin, also a good athlete, plays those 2 sports as well.

How could any high school football fan not recognize this season's accomplishments of Kevin Martin and Conner Reese? I agree with each blog that has been posted about Kevin and Conner.

Obviously Conner Reese and Kevin Martin in their catagories.
For 2nd Team QB: Logan Budd - Leading Scorer in the LPL and second only to Reese in total touchdowns (passing and rushing).
For 2nd Team Receiver: Tyler Bogart - a real game breaker offense and defense.
Running Backs: Kevin Scott - still leading the LPL even missing the last two games. Jake Romanelli - didn't get as many carries as some other people, but leads the county with an amazing 8.9 yards per carry. T.J. Nelson - for the sheer yardage this year, even if against lesser teams.
Defense: Ryan Cummings - County tackles leader in both total and per-game. Zach Thorne - County leader in interceptions and tackles in the Pac-7.
Kicking: Jake West - County leader in Kick Scoring.

What's going on with the County Leader Stats (pulled from MaxPreps) lately? I have nothing against the Mission players, but for a couple of weeks they've been listed first in certain categories (passing, for one and I think rushing and/or receiving as well) where their player isn't the leader. Those of us sports fans who follow the stats closely can see that they're out of order, but I do feel that the players who are at the top deserve to see their names there! For some of these players, this is their last opportunity to be publicly recognized for their accomplishments on the field.

well you have to consider that if anyone threw the about 5,000 times like that conner reese kid did then you would have just as much yards as he does. the kevin martin kid was the only person that he threw to also so thats why that kid has the yards. also they didnt really have a running attack so thats why they had to throw the ball about 50 times a game. neither of them should be co-county player of year. and to top it off what the hell is a co-county player of the year. there is only one. there is only one no sharing

Conner Reese 173/311 2683 yards 27 TD's

Bryan Lewelling avg. over 5 yards a carry.

Kevin Martin, Ben Hansen, and Sean Dubois catching the ball.

Sounds pretty balanced to me.

I think your choice of county player of the year was an excellent one. Atascadero was clearly the best football team in the county and Mike Reynoso was their biggest threat. Their defense was pretty good too. I want to thank you and your staff for fair treatment of ALL the teams in the county. You guys seemed to understand that a team as injury-riddled as Arroyo Grande's was, yet pulled themselves up to play well in every one of their games, was worthy of a high ranking in the county Top 10 poll. They lost three league games by a total of 12 points. Their pre-league schedule was the county's strongest when comparing how many of those opponents went on to CIF playoffs and victories. Just a few things puzzled me on the all-county team selections. On the all-county defense (1st & 2nd teams) were 5 SLO players. Yet, SLO gave up 130 points in league which was just one point behind Lompoc for the league high. AG gave up only 99 points yet put only 2 players on all defense. Atascadero, who scored 42 points to 13 on SLO, and gave up only 64 points in league, had 4 players named to all-defense. When it came to Honorable Mention, I was surprised (and disappointed) to see AG's LB/DB Chris Berguia, an Honorable mention last year, and a leading tackler for AG's fine defense this year, left off completely. Lastly, no kicker in the county topped AG's Chris Nichols for putting kickoffs in the endzone. He placed 67% of his kickoffs either into or OUT OF the endzone. He made ALL of his PATs in league and kicked two field goals, one of which was the difference in beating Lompoc, 17-14. No mention at all on him either. Well, all veteran fans know that winning draws more recognition, so be it. However, you may hear more in the coming years from a couple of kids left off the list. Thanks for good reporting. Just wish there were more aricles on the kids playing THROUGHOUT the county during the year. The Trib used to do that and it added a nice personal touch to the most followed sport in the county.=================

Look at the enrollment numbers at Lompoc and SLO. Far fewer students to build a football team with. Both those two schools should be commended for being able to compete. I would expect the larger schools to do well. When a school like SLO with only 1600 students does well it should be recognised. The fact they beat much larger schools in our league is huge. And believe me Lompoc will be a power next year.
