Don't hate on Hasay

Someone made light of the news impact Jordan Hasay has in our community in a post on a previous message.

Yeah, it may seem like she gets a lot of coverage. But to be fair to her feats, she really is a once in a generation athlete and might just be one of the most famous people — not athletes, people — in SLO County.

Put her up there with Zac Efron and Chuck Liddell, and by the end of her career, she might eclipse them all.

There is not a week that goes by where someone doesn't call the office asking about how they can see her. By comparison, she is the only local athlete who gets such calls. She's the only SLO County prep athlete I know with a Wikipedia page.

Speculation is by no means limited to whether or not she'll go to Cal Poly. Some people project her to go pro right out of high school. She's also accomplished enough in the classroom to get an academic scholarship to just about anywhere she chooses.

We'll find enough to write about when she eventually leaves the area, but for now, I recommend appreciating her while she's around.

Honestly, there isn't a sole on the planet that doesn't like Hasay. Well, maybe some of her competition may not like her. But here in SLO she is cherished. We are all so proud of her.

So the premiss of this blog is false, We think she is great. No one hates on her, they just want to see theor football playing have a turn in the spotlight. For most of the football players in the County the spotlight will be off them soon. Jordan's light will shine for decades.

Honestly, an all-the-marbles slugfest between unbeaten Atascadero and Paso Robles football teams might have gotten my vote for top sports story.

The fervor over such an event might be the only thing that eclipses Hasay's silver medal at the world meet she ran in the Czech Republic this past summer.

And here's the direct quote from the critic: "Jordan Hasay the story of the year? I often wonder whether the Trib is going to have anything to fill its sports pages with before deadline once Hasay graduates. The dream scenario for the sports department is Hasay going to Cal Poly for cross country and track."

I just felt the urge to defend our coverage of Hasay. For any who think it might be too much, there are just as many others who think it's not enough.

I just wanted to say that I'm from Atascadero but I live in San Diego and when Jordan races down here, she has an article in the San Diego Union Tribune. I think her article was on the front page of the sports page and her picture was on the front page. I don't think you'll be seeing Atascadero/Paso football game on that big of a newspaper. So congrats to Jordan...oh but I still want to say GO GREYHOUNDS!!
