Half empty or half full? You decide

Friday definitely was a feel-good day for San Luis Obispo County football fans.

All three of the county's high school football teams that hosted first round playoff matches Friday night won.

In some pretty impactful victories for their programs Atascadero, Morro Bay and Paso Robles all move on to the second round.

Atascadero and Paso Robles won playoff games for the first time in more than a few years, and the Greyhounds became the first PAC 5 or PAC 7 first-place seed to win in the first round. For Morro Bay, the win continued an undefeated season that gets more special each week.

On the flip side, the three road playoff teams had their seasons end with losses. San Luis Obispo, Nipomo and North County Christian are playing basketball.

Nipomo had a chance to join the group by winning its first playoff game in program history but lost by a field goal in overtime. North County Christian was playing for a chance to host an 8-man Division II semifinal but fell by 12.

Both teams had a chance to continue some feel good stories but fell short.

San Luis Obispo was up against a powerhouse, and few can blame them for a 27-7 loss to No. 1 Northern Division seed St. Bonaventure.

But what a special weekend it would have been if any five of the six teams had won. Nipomo almost pulled it off. North County Christian was close.

Sure, it was a great Friday for Atascadero, Morro Bay and Paso Robles. But is anyone else lamenting the missed opportunities of the other teams?

Now I know you still have to play football but Calpreps did a pretty good job of predicting the Northern Division games. They picked all the winners and picked were very close to the scores. Here are there predictions and the actual scores.
Atascadero (CA) 28 Moorpark (CA) 14 [projection: Atascadero (CA) 22-10]
Hart (Newhall, CA) 48 Thousand Oaks (CA) 24 [projection: Hart (Newhall, CA) 40-14]
Newbury Park (CA) 34 Santa Barbara (CA) 14 [projection: Newbury Park (CA) 31-17]
Paso Robles (CA) 49 Ventura (CA) 14 [projection: Paso Robles (CA) 38-17]
Saugus (CA) 34 Pacifica (Oxnard, CA) 3 [projection: Saugus (CA) 48-6]
St. Bonaventure (Ventura, CA) 27 San Luis Obispo (CA) 7 [projection: St. Bonaventure (Ventura, CA) 34-7]
Valencia (CA) 28 Oxnard (CA) 7 [projection: Valencia (CA) 28-19]
Westlake (Westlake Village, CA) 23 Camarillo (CA) 20 [projection: Westlake (Westlake Village, CA) 27-21]

Oh, and they only missed one game in the NW division. That's 15 for 16 and all the scores were very similar. Unfortunately, if they are right, A-town and PR will both lose next week...but then again, we know A-town is about breaking trends. GO HOUNDS!!! Beat Saugus!!

Why to go Hounds and Bearcats.
Hounds, no more PAC-7 curse. We love for that. Bearcats, yup, your real. Is there a rematch in 3 weeks????

I don't think it's a missed opportunity for Nipomo, because frankly, they didn't deserve to go. Sure, they had a 4-3 record in league just like Templeton and Pioneer, but a regular 5-5 record against a schedule that isn't that hard, and a win of 2 points because of 5 pioneer valley interceptions isn't really that convincing. The playoff seeds in the LPL were decided by a straw draw.

It was a good week-end for Central Coast, but the A'town win was the key.

SLO played tough in an impossible win.

St. Joe's, PV, & Nipomo all played close gaims against conference champs. Nipomo winning would have been stunning and they came close, and PV traveled a gazillion miles. Any one of them would have made the weekend special.

Now the big games start and we need Paso or A'town to knock out the Foothill teams and MB to get to the finals against Oaks Christian and exact some revenge.

I think if Paso can stop Hart a few times their offense is good enough to hand them their first loss and pull an upset. It will be Harts first true road game and that very long drive might have an effect on them.

And if atascadero cant run they are going to have teir hands full with saugus

Anonymous said...

Saugus should be a 10 point favorite over the Hounds ......

Hart will be a 5 point favorite over the Bearcats .......

If either Paso or Atown want to win they must score more than 35 points to have a shot ....

Great picks

I Got 3 out 4 scores exactly correct last week

Heartbreaker for Atascadero saugus comes back in forth (but could go either way)Its a good one
Saugus 24
Atown 21 (OT)

Paso wins in final minutes holds off Delano Howell a couple of times
Paso fans go nuts and continues to roll through CIF
Paso Robles 35
Hart 28

I think both of these games will be amazing but I think only one team will survive Make the Pac7 proud and make a statement I think both teams can nock off the foothill greats.

Anonymous said...

Good picks no bias torwards either team

I would think that the Harrington's have already examined coach Schemkie's toilet bowl and know exactly what type of play calling crap Schemkie will be blowing out his rear .............

With that being said I look forward to watching a great program like the Harrington's have established over the years .........

The Harringtons are like Stansbury, BTW, where is Bill when you need him ......

It's an honor to have the Hart boys on our field ........

Anonymous said...

Here are the projections from Calpreps.com...
Saugus is favored over A-town 28-21
Hart is favored over Paso 35-27. Both these games seem like they could be close but lets hope for some upsets.

Anonymous said...

You only gave half the facts .....

Those 'conclusions' are for 'nutral sites' .....

You must add 3 to Saugus & Paso for home game .......

Paso Paso Paso
It takes Hart to win next week.
Sorry, Game Over

The bearcats will not just lay down just cause they are playing hart they have plenty of heart and they will be ready on friday night.

why would we even play if we didnt think we could win.

PRide

I would have loved to get an opportunity as paso does. i would be filling with chills all week long till playing day on friday against one of the best teams in the state. im sure thats exactly how every player is feeling right now.

Anonymous said...

It's been awhile since Paso could say they are playing big time ball, well, they get their chance Friday! Paso has played big time programs in the past; Ie; Clovis West, Esperanza but lost, can the Crimson & White make a statement this week and bring Paso to another level of tradition?

The boys have the Hart but lets see if Schemkie plays with the four nuts he thinks he has ....

Anonymous said...

Still haven't played a big time game except against A-town. This week is the test. When Paso gets slapped by Hart then they are just another old Pac7 wannabe someone.

Atown V Saugus

I think Atown could win this game if...

1) Atown can't make the even the few mistakes they made against Moorpark

2) Coop needs to keep doing the QB keeper option, because it works so well....manier is such a great scrambling QB and Tenhauff is good RB....they make a great option.

3) Saugus is a good rushing team....and Atown has a good rush D....so A just needs to hold the rush.

Outcome if all the above happens....A 21+ S 14-

This weeks game projections are in

HART 35, Paso 27
SAUGUS 28, Atascadero 21
MORRO BAY 31, St. Bernard 14

I'm sure these will be close to true.

That leaves us with only Morro Bay to hope for in the County.

Paso needs to step up on the run defense! The need to swarm to the ball and wrap up! If they can hold Hart to 150 yards rushing they can win the game! 35-20 Paso Stuns Hart
Atown will come out of Saugus with a win. The greyhound rush defense is stellar! 21-10 Atascadero!

With the Hounds and Cats establishing glory to the PAC-7!

Morro Bay will win easily this week with their tougher tests coming the next two weeks! 42-7 Morro Bay wins big on the road

Anonymous said...

.....yeah wouldn't that be freakin awesome if A and P won both their games....it would make those So Cal coaches look alittle bad....you know it's crazy to think how similar P and A are....they are both 90% teams that play like 110% teams....both teams have good coaches that know how to use the talent they have, whether it's this year last year or next year......I think A and P could win their next games because of coaching and talent!

Anonymous said...

Sounds like someone emjoys sucking on Shemkie's tit .......

Anonymous said...

.....LOOKS like someone is weird!

Anonymous said...

Schimke is a horrible coach! The kids do not enjoy playing for him and he makes costly mistakes! He was handed pure talent for the cif runs in 99, 2000 and this years team is stacked full of talent and he has blown it big time!
Last week against Ventura was the first time all year that he put his offensive lineman in a good position! He finally allowed them to be in a three point stance! He ran counter! He went back to Stansbury's style which is what he originally took over!
The only worth while coaches on Paso's sideline's are Bill tidwell the JV head Coach and Alvord the defensive coach on varsity who is a football god!
Forget schimke! He is so dang arrogant it's rediculous!
Hey Beercat... Stansbury needs to come ASAP! Can we start a fan letter to beg him back!!!!?

Anonymous said...

a touchdown projected difference means a pretty even match.

Success this weekend will be 2 of the 3 teams advancing.

Anonymous said...

I would agree, 2 out of 3 would be nice! But I like 3 out of 3 ...

Anonymous said...

Hey rumor from the high school players at Paso says " Hart coach is complaining about having to make the loong trip to paso!" There longest road trip of the year has been 30 mins! We was complaining to Schimke that it should be played at a neutral site! What a freaking baby!! So if you are going to the game this friday make sure to be extra loud and make it hell for Hart!!!! Let the know what it is like to play football on the central coast! Come early, be loud and proud!!!!
It will be the last home game paso will play this year! Show your support for the seniors and be ready to raise hell in the stands! Go Cats! Give Hart HELL!!!

Anonymous said...

Complain?? If this is true, he's a big LOSER. MB has to go to LA. Pioneer Valley had to go SOUTH of LA to play last week. C'mon. There are 4 teams on the coast that would gladly board a bus and go to Montana to play a game this week if they had won.

LOSER.

Anonymous said...

Newbury Park or Valencia ...........

Anonymous said...

I hope that newbury wins so paso can go down there and return the favor from the 05 game!

Go Cats!

Anonymous said...

So, we have already beaten Hart and moving on to Newbury? What was the score in the Hart v Paso game?

Anonymous said...

somehow people are having a hard time believing paso can beat hart. although it does seem nearly impossible, i know that the game will be lot closer than what it seems like. hart has to go play at paso's home, having to drive for more than 3 hours, and come face to face with a loud home crowd. the players will be ready, coaches will have the smartest scheme than any other game theyve ever played. itll be another great game to watch and remember

Anonymous said...

....if I don't go down to Saugus then i'll go up and cheer with Paso....I hope paso wins and I think they have a good shot!

Anonymous said...

A 3 hour bus ride is not a bad thing. It keeps the team focused and together. Home teams goof off to much before the game when they should be focused. Usually not a problem except when Hart comes to town. Hart may very well be the best team left in the playoffs. A drop dead serious powerhouse. Paso will need everything to go right just so they don't get blown out by too much. The road trip is not a disadvantage. The loud crowd will just make them play hard.

No home field advantage.

Anonymous said...

How can you say no home field advantage! Hart has only traveled twice this year so far and the longest of those two trips was a whole 30 min trip! I understand your logic about how it keeps them foced... but it also keeps them stiff! I played on two cif championship teams with paso and we traveled a lot in those two years! It is not something that is easy to do especially if you are not used to it! Why do you think there coaches at Hart are complaining about the long trip?! Do you really think that they think its not a tough trip to make?

Anonymous said...

About 25-30 years ago I remember Paso having to travel to 29 Palms for a playoff game ........

Suck it up and drive .......

BTW, Paso won that game in the desert in a massive blowout ...

I've heard from reliable sources that college scouts will be at the game Friday ....

Anonymous said...

Will the Hart lover please go away. If you won't go peacefully then then we will make you leave our fine county by force on Friday night, a loser.

Anonymous said...

By the way. The difference between winning and losing this week will be strictly turnovers.

I was at the SLO vs St. Bonnie game last week. If SLO hadn't turned the ball over they would have had a very, very close game indeed. With a shot at victory.

I believe that both Paso and Atas. have tougher kids then the southern teams do.
SLO had much more heart then St. Bonnie.
No turnovers and you will both win. One turnover and it's a very close game. More then that and there is no one to blame.

Anonymous said...

Have you seen Hart's Big "J" ???

390 lbs ..............

Ouch!

I would agree, no turnovers and the CATS can win this game ....

Anonymous said...

I viewed pictures on hart web site... www.hartindiansfootball.com and didn't see any of Big J actually playing.

Anonymous said...

This just in about Hart's stud linebacker.....
UCLA-bound linebacker Patrick Larimore did not play for Hart after having surgery to repair torn ligaments in his thumb. Larimore is doubtful to play next week, but Herrington said he expects his top defensive player to return for the Northern Division semifinals if the Indians make it that far.
This is from an article in the LA Daily News!
Things looking up for the Bearcats!

You could say half empty or half full but after Morro Bay falls I would say the milk got spilled. There isn't anything in that glass. No reason crying of spilled milk. SoCal's glass is always full.

How is Garried Mitchell second team he was clearly if you went to the games the best hitter and tackler in the Pac 7 he had alot of interceptions and he was also a better returner than Nathan Nelson if you watched this kid he was in the highlights every friday night with a huge hit or big play
He will be a superstar for paso next year a three year starter and the leader of the bearcats
